(WACO, Texas)—Candidates endorsed by Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Friends of Agriculture (AGFUND), Inc. fared well in the midterm election.
“We need leaders on both sides of the aisle who understand agriculture and the needs of rural Texas,” Russell Boening, president of TFB and AGFUND, said. “We believe the candidates we supported can bring that to our governing processes. We look forward to working with all those who were elected.”
Overall, AGFUND-endorsed candidates finished election night with 126 wins and 24 losses, giving the Farm Bureau PAC a winning percentage of 83 percent.
In statewide races, AGFUND-backed candidates—including Sen. Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Comptroller Glenn Hegar and Land Commissioner George P. Bush—won their races.
“The Lone Star State is growing increasingly urban. That’s why it’s so important to have elected officials who understand the needs and issues facing rural Texas,” Boening said. “Gov. Abbott and Lt. Gov. Patrick have provided great leadership for rural Texas and agriculture, and they recognize the contributions of farmers and ranchers to our state.”
Boening noted Cruz, who faced a highly-contested race, also has helped pass federal legislation important to rural Texas.
“Senator Cruz has been a pro-agriculture leader in Congress and has met with many farmers and ranchers on issues affecting Texas agriculture,” Boening said. “We will continue to work with him on those ag-related issues, such as the farm bill.”
Texas Farm Bureau is the state’s largest organization of farm, ranch and rural families. AGFUND is its political action arm funded by voluntary donations from members.
Federal law prohibits Texas Farm Bureau AGFUND from soliciting contributions outside the restricted class. Contributions will be screened and those from persons outside the restricted class will be returned.
